Prayers that are guided by Scripture are powerful because when we pray according to God’s will we are assured that He hears and will respond to our prayer. Our faith grows and is strengthened by praying the promises of God over our lives, and faith is an essential part of prayer. We know that without faith it is impossible to please God, but the reality is that living a life of faith is difficult and we need all the help we can get!
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

What are the Promises of God to Man?
Scripture is full of God’s promises to mankind, for He is a covenant God, a Promise-Maker, and a Promise-Keeper. Some people have counted and may dispute exactly how many promises there are in Scripture, but there are many! There are Bible verses that declare who God is, and they become a promise of His unchanging character, that we can depend upon.
But we also see God’s promises in His relationship with mankind. From the beginning, the account in Genesis and onwards, we see God’s promises to redeem and restore our relationship with Him. This is God’s covenant, and His intentional nature towards us, fulfilled in Christ Jesus.
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

Praying God’s Promises
When we practice praying the promises of God, we need to remember that some promises are conditional. There are promises of God that require a response from us, to release that word into our lives. We also must be careful that we don’t take the Scripture out of context, that what we are claiming as a promise is the truth of God’s word for all people and all time.
There may be occasions when we may feel that a particular verse of Scripture is speaking a promise for our specific situation. I know that there have been times when a verse of Scripture has strengthened me through difficult times or challenged me for a new season. It felt like that verse was just for me, God’s whisper of hope and encouragement – this is sometimes referred to as a Rhema word.
How to Pray the Promises of God
Praying Through the Psalms
Some of the most well-known ‘prayers’ in the Bible are psalms. They were written with a dual purpose as songs and prayers, for often the prayers would be sung! I love the poetry of the psalms, and so often when we are struggling to express ourselves, we can read through a psalm with a prayerful attitude and allow those timeless words to speak for us.

The theme of some of the psalms may relate to the writer’s particular situation. Psalm 27 is an example of a confident prayer written by king David for God to deliver him from all those who opposed his reign. We know that often the physical threat to his life was very real, and we generally do not encounter those dangers. But there are verses that we can apply to our hard and difficult situations. The declarations of faith that we see in Scripture can guide our prayers to trust in the LORD and to wait on Him.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”
Psalm 27:1, 13-14
Praying the Promises of God – Lord, I praise You that You are my light and my salvation. I thank You that You are my security in any and every circumstance, You take away all my fear. I pray for godly confidence to see Your goodness at work in my life. Strengthen me, and encourage me, to wait for You, to trust that You will bring me through this situation with praise and glory for Your name. Amen.
Claiming God’s Promises
There are powerful timeless spiritual truths, individual verses that declare God’s character, and the blessings that are ours in Christ Jesus. We can strengthen our faith by taking those words and repeating them verbatim in prayer as a declaration over our own life. Transformation comes when we renew our minds with who God is, and consequently, who we are in relationship to Him. Our identity becomes rooted in God, in our value and worth to Him. These are just a few of my favorite Scriptures, praying the promises of God into my life:
I Am Loved by God
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" 1 John 3:1
God is My Help and Strength
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
God is Faithful
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Unfailing Love of God
“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23
God will Provide
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:31-32
Standing on His Promises in Prayer
All of God’s promises to us are fulfilled in Christ Jesus, so the reality of His promises are the spiritual blessings that we receive in the Lord. There are many passages of Scripture that unpack the truths of our identity and inheritance in Christ Jesus. These words can be formed into powerful prayers when we know who God is, and all that Jesus has done for us. God’s word becomes not only known but experienced and impacts our daily lives!
Our faith grows and is strengthened by praying the promises of God over our lives, and faith is an essential part of prayer!

Spiritual Blessings
Ephesians 1:3
I thank you, Father God, that all Your good promises are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. That I am abundantly blessed, that You have provided for all of my needs. Help me to grasp the reality that every spiritual blessing is mine, to enable me to live in the fullness of Jesus’ victory now and with hope for the future. Amen.
Ephesians 1:4 Chosen
Thank You, Father God, for the reminder that I am chosen by You. I am known intimately by You, I am Your workmanship, created and designed by You. I am here by Your will and purpose, significant to You, and bought at an unimaginable cost. By Your grace alone, in Jesus’ sacrifice, I am forgiven, redeemed, and made holy in Your sight. Help me to be willing to co-work with Your grace and to submit to Your continued sanctification. Amen.
Ephesians 1: 5 Loved and Adopted
Thank You, Father God, that I am loved by You. Your love cannot be measured, and it is everlasting and unfailing, a love that never gives up on me. Help me to know, deep in my spirit my value and worth. I thank You for the privilege that is mine to be adopted into Your family. I am now a child of God and precious in Your sight. Help me to live in a way that honors You, for Your praise and glory. Amen.
Ephesians 1:7 Redeemed
Thank You, Heavenly Father, for the forgiveness of my sins, that the blood of Jesus has redeemed my life. By Your grace, I am freed from the power of sin, it no longer has a hold on me. Help me to live, without condemnation, released into the wide-open space of Your grace, where I can stand tall and declare my praise to You. Help me to be confident in who I am now and to live in the abundant life that Jesus has won for me. Amen.
Spiritual Inheritance
Ephesians 1:8 Lavish Grace
I praise You, Heavenly Father, that You are a God of abundance and endless riches. You are a generous God who does not withhold but lavishes love and grace on Your children. I thank You that I am a recipient of Your grace, today, and every day, for Your love for me never fails. Help me today to have that awareness of my true identity, of who I am as a child of God, receiving Your lavish love and grace. Amen.
Ephesians 1:9-10 Favor and Unity
Thank You, Father God, that I live in the time of Your favor, with the knowledge of Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I praise You, that we have a future hope, one day everything will be made new, and we will live in love and unity, under the reign of Christ Jesus. Amen.
Ephesians 1:11 Purpose
Thank you, God, that I have been chosen by You, and that You have a purpose and meaning for my life which is found in Christ Jesus. Help me to keep Jesus as the center of my life, around whom everything else revolves, for His praise and glory. Amen.
Ephesians 1: 13-14 Inheritance
I thank and praise You, Lord, that I have an eternal inheritance in heaven, the substance of my hope. One day I will be with You forever, there will be no more pain or suffering, everything will be made new, for Your praise and glory. Amen.
