As soon as we start to study the Bible verses about fear of the Lord, we realize what it is not! It is not a spirit of fear, of being afraid of God, or living with fear and anxiety. There are so many verses in the Bible, approximately three hundred and sixty-five, that begin with, Fear not, or Do not be afraid. God does not want His people to live in fear. What Are The Characteristics of The Fear of God For Believers Today?

At first we might think that the fear of God would make us wary and keep our distance from Him. But, as we study this topic further we find that conversely, it draws us to Him. The fear of the Lord is a gift from God that instills a deep desire within us to please and obey Him.

The fear of the Lord comes with an eternal perspective. It is when we know who we are and where we are going. That enables us to keep an awareness of how transient life is and that one day we will be with the Lord forever.

The characteristics of the fear of God are wisdom, authority, strength, humility, obedience, and blessing. And they are demonstrated to us by Jesus, who lived to do the Father’s will. He ministered with power and authority but also with a gentle and humble spirit, delighting in the fear of the LORD.

“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD – and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” Isaiah 11:2-3

Scripture is full of Bible verses about the fear of the Lord. They express through wisdom literature, songs, and prayers, the benefits of the fear of the Lord. This perspective may be challenging but it is one to embrace as the key to a healthy, vibrant, relationship with God.

The book of Proverbs contains a collection of wise sayings. In Scripture, it is here, more than anywhere else that we find Bible verses about fear of the LORD. Repeatedly the writers declare that the source of true wisdom and knowledge begins with the fear of the LORD. And this knowledge will keep us secure from evil with an eternal perspective on life.

Fear of The LORD is Wisdom

The fear of the Lord brings a loving reverence for God and the truth of His word. He has promised to freely give wisdom to all who ask Him. True wisdom begins with the humility to recognize our need for guidance.

  • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise. Psalm 111:10
  • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
  • Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the LORD; and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 15:33

Walking in The Fear of The LORD

Benefits of Fearing God

Our society is riddled with fear for the future and anxiety has become a real issue for many people. But the benefits of the fear of the Lord are profound and immense. They begin with a deep sense of security and release from life’s fears. That may sound like a contradiction but read on for a reminder of the blessings that are in store for those who fear the Lord.

  • Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor, blessings and prosperity will be yours. Psalm 128:1-2
