Abiding in Christ Bible verses are full of encouragement to strengthen our faith. But what exactly does it mean to abide in Christ? The word abide is a verb that means to accept, but it is not passive, it is an active acceptance. Abiding in Christ then, is a process of nurturing our faith through our relationship with the Lord.
What does Abiding in Christ mean?
Abiding in Christ is all about relationship! In the pressure of increasingly busy lives, it can be difficult to maintain relationships. For a personal relationship to thrive we need to be intentionally present, to respond and communicate with one another. It is easy to drift apart when there are so many demands for our attention. But if the relationship is important, we prioritize and give the time to make it work.
The most important relationship we will ever have is with the Lord Jesus.
In Scripture ‘abide in Christ’ means to live, to be united with, to continue, or to remain in Him. To abide in Christ is to prioritize our relationship with Him above everything else. When we know that we are totally dependent on Jesus and the time that we spend with Him. Because without that time in God’s word and prayer, we are lost.
Abiding in Christ then is when He is the substance and the source of our lives. When we know that He is our ever-present friend, our joy, and our strength every day. And our desire is to live with Him, and to dwell in His presence forever.
Abiding in Christ Verse
The context of abiding in Christ is found in Jesus’ teaching in John chapter fifteen. It is here that Jesus makes His final statement in describing His ministry. Jesus declares, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”
In the Old Testament, the imagery of the vine is often used to describe Israel’s relationship with God. A relationship where Israel is lacking in some way. But Jesus is the true vine and He is encouraging us to stay connected to Him! That is the way for us, not just to survive in life but to thrive.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” John 15:4 NKJV
“Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.” John 15:4 MSG
